Mazda has long been known for manufacturing cars and SUVs that stand out in their segment. From the iconic and sporty MX-5 Miata to the family-friendly and upscale CX-9, Mazda's lineup delivers a class-above driving experience for an impressively mainstream price, with classy accommodations, superb handling, sophisticated styling, and appealing amenities. Now, the carmaker is planting its flag in new territory with the all-new 2023 CX-50, a CX-5-based crossover that blends Mazda's signature refinement and driving dynamics with a bevy of enhancements targeted at drivers with active outdoor lifestyles.

Rugged Capability

The CX-50's powertrain options mirror those available in its CX-5 sibling. The standard 2.5-liter SKYACTIV®-G (187 horsepower, 186 pound-feet of torque) sends adequate power to the wheels through a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. Mazda's i-ACTIV AWD system comes standard, providing enhanced handling and control in inclement weather or off-road situations. And a new Mazda Intelligent Drive (Mi-Drive) system allows for easy configuration of the CX-50's driving dynamics to suit various conditions like off-road terrain or on-road towing.

The CX-50 really comes alive with the optional 2.5 Turbo engine, which makes 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque with regular gas. However, with premium fuel, drivers can unlock the powerplant's full potential (250 hp, 320 lb-ft).

Adventure-Ready Accommodations

Mazda's signature interior sophistication takes on a new life inside the CX-50's cabin, which exhibits modern design details, quality materials, and elements Mazda says are inspired by technical outdoor gear, like terracotta-hued leather trim, bootlace-patterned stitching, and control knob knurling reminiscent of a telephoto lens.

The interior is cozy and spacious, much like the CX-5, with ample headroom and legroom and seats that provide long-distance comfort. The 60/40-split rear seatbacks fold neatly, expanding the cargo area from 31.4 to 56.3 cubic feet. And a programmable power liftgate and low liftover height make it easier to stow and retrieve one's gear. Mazda offers a few roof rack options for equipment that won't fit inside, including a high-strength ladder-type strong enough for a rooftop tent.

Technology and Safety Features

The Mazda CX-50's base trim comes standard with an 8.8-inch infotainment display that seamlessly integrates numerous smartphone apps. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work wireless, allowing for clutter-free connectivity of features like Google and Apple Maps, streaming media, and hands-free calls and messages. All higher tiers get a larger 10.25-inch display, and a head-up display comes standard on 2.5 S Premium Plus, 2.5 Turbo Premium, and 2.5 Turb Premium Plus models.

All 2023 CX-50 models include a generous assortment of driver-assistance features, providing an elevated degree of confidence and convenience behind the wheel. Standard Mazda i-ACTIVSENSE technologies include:

  • Mazda Smart Brake Support (forward collision warning and mitigation)
  • Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane-Keep Assist
  • Driver Attention Alert
  • Automatic High Beam Control
